Betamethasone Cream for Eczema: Usage and Effects

Betamethasone cream is used to treat a number of different skin conditions which cause irritated, itching and red skin. It is therefore often considered as a treatment for eczema. Betamethasone actually comes in various treatment options ranging from specific scalp treatments to plasters. However, for most people, the cream formula is most suitable as it’s easy to apply and absorb, without being greasy.

Eczema is common, and is actually a group of different conditions which present similarly. With eczema, the skin is ‘reactive’ and there are likely to be areas which are itchy and red. These may be sore and can be moist and weepy. You are more likely to experience eczema if you allergies, or other autoimmune conditions. Most eczema can be easily controlled with creams as well as avoiding or minimizing triggers.

Is betamethasone cream good for eczema?

Many individuals with eczema will use betamethasone, particularly if they are experiencing a troublesome flare-up which isn’t responding very well to the milder hydrocortisone creams that are available.

Betamethasone is a steroid and works well to stop the skin’s ‘over-reaction’ which is causing the irritation. It is manufactured under various different brand names, such as Betnovate. Many eczema sufferers like to have some betamethasone cream in their medicine cabinet, ready to catch flare-ups quickly.

Can you buy Betnovate cream over the counter?

Whether you can buy betamethasone cream without a prescription will depend on the regulations in your particular country. It’s not usually recommended as a first line treatment, unless you’ve learned that other options don’t work for you. Generally, you should try milder options first. However, if you want to use betamethasone, you can buy it ‘over the counter’ by buying it from us at International Pharmacy. We ship worldwide.

How do you use betamethasone cream?

It’s important to follow the instructions provided with the cream. Whilst it is suitable for conditions like eczema, you shouldn’t use it to treat other problems such as acne or rosacea. Most people, including children over 1 year, can use betamethasone creams but it will depend on the dosage. It shouldn’t be used if you have infected skin.

Betamethasone cream is most suitable if your eczema is slightly moist. If your skin is drier, then you may prefer the more hydrating ointments which have a greasier consistency.

Most creams are applied once or twice a day to the affected area. The cream will come with instructions telling you how much to apply. You need apply it with clean and dry hands, smoothing it into the skin in a circular motion. Make sure you apply it to all of the affected skin, and not just where it is itchy, or most troublesome. However, take care not to apply the cream on broken skin.

A common mistake whilst using betamethasone cream is to apply it soon after, or before, using another cream, emollient or moisturizer (including sun cream). You need to put betamethasone cream on clean and dry skin first and then wait at least half an hour before you use any other cream or product.

It’s very important to note that betamethasone comes with a fire warning. On your skin, this is very unlikely to be a problem as it is absorbed. However, it’s possible for the cream to dry onto fabrics like bedding and clothes, during the application process, and through movement. It’s therefore really important to wash the fabrics that come into contact with the cream regularly.

Betamethasone is usually a short term treatment

Betamethasone is typically only used when you’re really struggling with your eczema symptoms, and when other milder options like hydrocortisone cream aren’t enough. As such, the aim is to only use it for a short time. For most people this will mean they only need a few days of using the cream. Others may need to use it for a few weeks.

Do stop using the cream when your skin is better. Long term use of betamethasone can cause thinning of the skin. It’s rarely recommended that you use betamethasone when pregnant, but small areas of treatment, away from the breast area, are considered safe during breast-feeding. If you are using the cream and are a breastfeeding mother, then ensure you wash your hands thoroughly after applying the cream before you feed your baby.

It’s important to stop using the cream if your eczema gets worse whilst using it. However, it is very difficult to overdose with a cream like this. It’s quite common for the skin to sting or slightly burn when you first apply the cream, especially on moist eczema. Stop using it if you experience a stomach upset, or have dizziness, or other adrenal gland symptoms.
