A Complete Guide to Cytomel & Liothyronine

Cytomel is the brand name for liothyronine sodium tablets which are used for thyroid treatment. Before you consider where to buy liothyronine or how to buy T3 online, it’s important that you understand what this medication is, how it’s used, how it can help you manage your thyroid condition, and any side effects that you may experience. In our guide, we take you through everything you need to know about T3 Cytomel and non-branded liothyronine tablets, so you can make the best decisions regarding your health and hypothyroidism management.

What is T3 used for?

First of all, let’s consider what T3 is used for. Most GPs prescribe synthetic thyroid replacement hormones to patients with thyroid problems, usually in the form of levothyroxine. These synthetic medications typically only include the T4 hormone. This is the stored form of thyroid hormone in our bodies. We need to convert it in to T3. However, not everyone can do this adequately. In these instances, often shown by ongoing hypothyroid symptoms, T3 thyroid tablets can be beneficial.

Hypothyroid treatment, T3 and Cytomel

To fully understand why you may need T3 Cytomel or liothyronine treatment, or other natural sources of T3 thyroid hormone, it’s important to understand a little about how the thyroid gland works.

The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland that sits at the front base of your neck. It’s a critical gland for regulating a myriad of processes in your body. As a gland, it secrets hormones that are used in various ways but most importantly, it’s responsible for regulating your metabolism. Your metabolism is how your body uses food and converts it into energy. If the thyroid produces too much hormone then your metabolism goes too fast (hyperthyroidism) and if it doesn’t produce enough, then your metabolism is too slow (hypothyroidism). This has many knock-on effects. Your metabolism needs to be finely tuned by the right balance of hormones.

The thyroid gland secretes two main hormones into the bloodstream. One of these is thyroxine, which contains four atoms of iodine and is often called T4. This in turn is converted to tri-iodothyronine (T3), which contains three atoms of iodine. It is the T3 that is biologically active and regulates your body’s metabolism. Most healthy people without thyroid problems have no problems converting T4 into T3, so they never need to think about these different hormones. However, some people with thyroid problems do have problems converting T4 into T3, and these are the people who may wish to consider T3 thyroid tablets.

If you have hypothyroidism then your thyroid gland isn’t producing enough thyroid hormones, or your body is struggling to convert T4 hormones into the active T3 needed for a healthy metabolism.

Signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism

As it affects so much of your body’s processes, via your metabolism, hypothyroidism can cause a plethora of issues. Unfortunately, taken in isolation, many of the symptoms can be mistaken for other things or overlooked. However, when viewed together, it is worth getting investigations done at your GP. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include:

  • Tiredness and lethargy
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Gaining weight
  • Low mood
  • Constipation and digestive concerns
  • Fuzziness and difficulty thinking
  • Muscle cramps, aches and weakness
  • Dry hair, skin and nails
  • Reduced sex drive
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome (pins and needles, pain or numbness in your fingers)
  • Disrupted menstrual cycles

Hypothyroidism can easily be diagnosed with a blood test which measures your thyroid hormone levels. If you have had your thyroid gland removed (for example due to thyroid cancer or hyperthyroidism), then you will also have hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism

Untreated, hypothyroidism can cause a raft of long-term problems. However, while treatment is usually for life, it’s usually effective.

Most people diagnosed with hypothyroidism will be put on a medication called levothyroxine. This is a synthetic thyroid hormone T4. The body then converts this into the active T3. For many people, this is effective and hypothyroid symptoms reduce. It may take some time to get the dose right.

However, for some people, levothyroxine isn’t as effective as hoped. It may not fully manage hypothyroid symptoms. In these instances, it’s possible that their body is failing to adequately convert the T4 hormone into the active T3. Their symptoms remain and things can be very difficult.

As levothyroxine is a relatively low cost medication and widely available in many counties, hypothyroidism patients are often not offered any alternative. However, you do have options if you think you would benefit from T3 – either via Cytomel or liothyroine, or natural thyroid treatments.

What causes low T3?

In some cases, the thyroid is functioning properly but still doesn’t produce enough T3. This is called low T3 syndrome (or euthyroid sick syndrome/non-thyroidal illness syndrome). In other cases, it could be part of your hypothyroidism. Low T3 syndrome is caused by a number of chronic and acute conditions including severe infection, fasting/starvation, trauma, heart attack, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), diabetic ketoacidosis, autoimmune disease, kidney failure, chronic fatigue syndrome and more.

What are the symptoms of low T3?

Symptoms of low T3 mirror those of hypothyroidism, such as tiredness, weight gain, muscle cramps and pains, and depression. It may be necessary to look at the breakdown of your thyroid blood tests to determine if your symptoms may be due to low T3 rather than low thyroid hormones overall.

T3 thyroid tablets for sale

If you have low T3 levels, there are a number of different ways that you can access T3 hormones to help you manage your hypothyroidism.

You can buy natural thyroid tablets, such as Armour thyroid tablets. These are made from porcine thyroid. They can be effective for many (and indeed are the original thyroid treatment!), but it’s difficult to get accurate dosing.

Alternatively, liothyronine or Cytomel are an option. These are synthetic versions of T3 and T4.

  • What is the difference between levothyroxine and Cytomel?Levothyroxine is a synthetic hypothyroidism treatment that replaces
your T4 hormone. Cytomel is a synthetic hypothyroidism treatment that
replaces your T4 hormone but also replaces your T3 hormone. Both are
available in tablet form and are used to manage hypothyroidism symptoms.

  • What is the difference between Cytomel and liothyronine?Cytomel is a brand name for liothyronine. Otherwise, these
medications are the same with both containing T3 and T4 thyroid
hormones. Both come in a tablet form, available in a range of doses.
Cytomel and liothyronine are an alternative hypothyroidism treatment to
    the standard levothyroxine.

Benefits of Cytomel

Cytomel, or liothyronine, is useful as a supplemental or replacement thyroid treatment for those with most forms of hypothyroidism. It is particularly useful for patients who wish to take a T3 and T4 compound but who are allergic to either desiccated thyroid, or one of the natural thyroid remedy inactive ingredients. For patients who like clear and reliable doses, a synthetic medication is often the best option. As it is made using synthetic thyroid hormone, it is much more possible to ascertain a standardized dose.

What are the most common side effects of Cytomel?

All medicines and supplements can cause side effects. Cytomel side effects are rare but include temporary hair loss, stomach complaints including nausea and vomiting, chest pains, palpitations, sensitivity to heat and excessive sweating, anxiety, changes in appetite.

Is Cytomel good for weight loss?

Myths abound about Cytomel and weight loss. Cytomel should not be used to aid weight loss in those without a thyroid disorder. It is potentially dangerous in high doses for those without hypothyroidism. Cytomel is safe to use for those with hypothyroidism to manage their symptoms which include weight gain.
