What is alendronate and what is it used for:
Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates, which work by slowing down the activity of bone cells that break down bone tissue. It is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak and brittle, and to treat Paget’s disease, a condition that causes abnormal bone growth.

How to take alendronate:
Alendronate is taken orally, usually once a week, on an empty stomach with a full glass of water. It should be taken at least 30 minutes before the first food, beverage, or medication of the day. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking alendronate, as this can cause irritation in the esophagus.

Possible side effects of alendronate:
Alendronate may cause some side effects, including:

• Stomach upset, nausea, or diarrhea
• Constipation
• Bone, muscle, or joint pain
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Eye pain or redness
• Swelling in the hands or feet
• Difficulty swallowing

If any of these side effects persist or worsen, inform your doctor immediately. Rare but serious side effects may include severe bone, joint, or muscle pain, jaw problems, and vision changes.
