Description
Brand name: Genvoya
Generic name: Elvitegravir, Cobicistat, Emtricitabine, and Tenofovir Alafenamide
What is Genvoya and what is it used for:
Genvoya is a prescription medication used to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and children who weigh at least 77 pounds (35 kg). It is a combination of four drugs: elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide. This medication works by preventing the virus from multiplying in the body and lowering the amount of HIV in the blood. Genvoya is not a cure for HIV and does not prevent the spread of HIV to others.
How to take Genvoya:
Genvoya is taken orally, with or without food. The dosage and duration of treatment will depend on the individual’s condition and response to treatment. It is important to take the medication at the same time every day to maintain a consistent level of the medication in the body.
Possible side effects of Genvoya:
Genvoya may cause some side effects, including:
• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach pain
• Headache
• Trouble sleeping
• Abnormal dreams
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Tiredness
• Skin rash
• Changes in body fat distribution
These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medication. However, if they persist or worsen, inform your doctor immediately. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Precautions and warnings for Genvoya:
Before taking Genvoya, inform your doctor if you have any medical conditions, such as kidney or liver disease. Genvoya may interact with certain medications, so it is important to inform your doctor of all medications and supplements you are taking.
Genvoya may cause a decrease in bone mineral density, which can lead to osteoporosis or fractures. Your doctor may monitor your bone density during treatment. Genvoya may also cause a buildup of lactic acid in the blood, which can be serious or life-threatening. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, or tenderness, numbness or tingling in your hands or feet, or nausea and vomiting.
Genvoya is a prescription medication and should only be taken under the supervision of a healthcare provider. It is not recommended for use during pregnancy. HIV can be passed to a baby if the mother is not properly treated during pregnancy. Women with HIV should not breastfeed their babies because the virus can be passed through breast milk.
