Important Warning
Minocycline ER is an extended-release tetracycline-class antibiotic. Its use may cause severe and life-threatening conditions such as intracranial hypertension (increased pressure in the brain), drug-induced lupus-like syndrome, and severe skin reactions.
Avoid prolonged use of this medication, as it may increase the risk of permanent tooth discoloration, especially in children under 8 years of age. Use in pregnant women is not recommended due to potential harm to the fetus, including skeletal development issues.
Uses for Minocycline ER
Minocycline ER is primarily used to treat:
Moderate-to-severe inflammatory acne vulgaris in patients 12 years and older.
It is not indicated for the treatment of non-inflammatory acne or for infections unrelated to acne.
Before Using Minocycline ER
Allergies
Inform your doctor if you have had any allergic reactions to tetracyclines, such as doxycycline or tetracycline. Also disclose any other allergies (e.g., to foods, dyes, preservatives).
Pediatric and Geriatric Use
Pediatric: Not recommended for children under 12 years old, as it may cause permanent tooth discoloration and affect bone growth.
Geriatric: Older adults may experience increased sensitivity to side effects, such as dizziness and intracranial hypertension.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Minocycline ER is categorized as pregnancy category D. It may harm the unborn baby. Use is not recommended.
Breastfeeding: Minocycline passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. Discuss with your doctor before use.

Antacids or supplements containing calcium, magnesium, aluminum, or iron (may reduce absorption of minocycline)

Proper Use of Minocycline ER

Follow your doctor’s instructions exactly. The typical dosage is based on body weight, with most patients taking 1 extended-release tablet once daily for 12 weeks. Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Storage
Store minocycline ER tablets at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep out of the reach of children.
Precautions While Using Minocycline ER
Avoid excessive sun exposure while taking this medication, as it may cause photosensitivity. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors.
Do not use minocycline ER after the expiration date, as expired tetracycline antibiotics can cause kidney damage.
