Description

Drug Name: Mirtazapine

Brand Names: Remeron, Remeron SolTab

Drug Class: Antidepressant

Uses: Mirtazapine is used to treat major depressive disorder. It can also be used to treat anxiety, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Administration: Mirtazapine is available in tablet form and is taken orally. It is usually taken once daily, preferably at bedtime. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed, chewed or broken.

Side Effects: Common side effects of mirtazapine include drowsiness, dizziness, increased appetite, weight gain, dry mouth, and constipation. Rare but serious side effects may include suicidal thoughts or actions, serotonin syndrome, and agranulocytosis.

Precautions: Mirtazapine should not be taken by patients who are allergic to it or have used an MAOI in the past 14 days. It should also be used with caution in patients with a history of seizures, liver or kidney disease, or a heart condition. Mirtazapine may also interact with other medications, so patients should inform their doctor of all medications they are taking.

Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Mirtazapine may be harmful to a developing fetus, so it should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. It is not known if mirtazapine passes into breast milk, so breastfeeding is not recommended while taking this medication.

Overdose: In the event of an overdose, patients should seek immediate medical attention or call their local poison control center. Symptoms of an overdose may include drowsiness, confusion, and seizures.
