Uses

Risedronate is used to treat or prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and to treat Paget’s disease of bone in both men and women.

Administration

Risedronate is usually taken by mouth, either as a tablet or a delayed-release tablet. It is typically taken once a day or once a week, depending on the dosage prescribed by your doctor.

Precautions

Before taking risedronate, inform your doctor if you have any of the following:

• Kidney disease
• Low blood calcium levels
• Difficulty swallowing or other digestive problems
• Pregnancy or plans to become pregnant
• Breastfeeding

Risedronate can cause side effects such as gastrointestinal upset, bone pain, and headaches. It can also rarely cause more serious side effects such as jaw problems, eye problems, and severe bone, joint, or muscle pain. Be sure to inform your doctor if you experience any unusual symptoms while taking risedronate.

Drug Interactions

Some medications can interact with risedronate, including aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and supplements such as calcium and magnesium. Be sure to inform your doctor of all medications and supplements you are taking before starting risedronate.

Storage

Risedronate should be stored at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep out of reach of children.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of risedronate, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

If you suspect an overdose of risedronate, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting.
