FDA-approved uses: Treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder.

Off-label uses: Treatment of anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and Tourette’s disorder.

Administration: Risperdal can be taken with or without food, but it should be taken at the same time each day. The orally disintegrating tablets should be allowed to dissolve on the tongue before swallowing.

Side effects: Dizziness, drowsiness, weight gain, constipation, dry mouth, and restlessness. Risperdal can also cause potentially serious side effects such as tardive dyskinesia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, and increased risk of stroke and death in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis.

Drug interactions: Risperdal may interact with other medications that affect the brain, including antidepressants, antipsychotics, and drugs used to treat anxiety and seizures.

Contraindications: Risperdal is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to risperidone or any of its components. It should also be used with caution in patients with a history of seizures, cardiovascular disease, or diabetes.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Risperdal is classified as pregnancy category C, which means it may be harmful to a developing fetus. It is not recommended for use during pregnancy unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Risperdal can also pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant, so it should not be used while breastfeeding unless directed by a healthcare provider.
