Uses:
Sevelamer is used to lower high blood phosphate levels in patients with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis. It works by binding with the phosphate from the diet so that it can be eliminated from the body through the feces.

Dosage:
The recommended starting dose for Sevelamer is 800-1600 mg, taken three times a day with meals. The dose can be adjusted based on the patient’s phosphate levels and response to treatment.

Side effects:
Common side effects of Sevelamer include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, and flatulence. Serious side effects may include low blood calcium levels, difficulty swallowing, and blockages in the digestive tract.

Precautions:
Sevelamer should not be used in patients with bowel obstruction, severe constipation, or a history of bowel motility disorders. It should also be used with caution in patients with low blood calcium levels or a history of seizures. Sevelamer can interact with other medications, so patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications they are taking.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding:
The safety of Sevelamer in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Patients should consult their healthcare provider before using Sevelamer during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Drug interactions:
Sevelamer may interact with other medications, including ciprofloxacin, levothyroxine, and mycophenolate mofetil. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications they are taking before starting Sevelamer.
