Drug class: HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins)

Uses: Simvastatin is used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. It is also used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other complications in people with diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other risk factors.

Administration: Simvastatin is taken orally, usually once daily, with or without food. The dose and frequency of use will depend on the individual’s medical condition and response to treatment.

Common side effects:

• Headache
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Constipation
• Diarrhea
• Stomach pain
• Muscle and joint pain
• Dizziness
• Cold symptoms (such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat)

Serious side effects:

• Muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness (may be a sign of a rare but serious condition called rhabdomyolysis)
