Indications: Sucralfate is indicated for the treatment of duodenal ulcers and gastric ulcers, as well as for the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Dosage: The recommended adult dosage for sucralfate is 1 gram (g) four times a day on an empty stomach. The tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water.
Administration: Sucralfate tablets should be taken on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. The tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. Antacids should not be taken within 30 minutes of sucralfate administration.
Contraindications: Sucralfate is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components.
Warnings and precautions: Patients should be advised to take sucralfate exactly as prescribed by their healthcare provider. Sucralfate should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment. Adequate hydration should be maintained in patients using sucralfate. Sucralfate may interfere with the absorption of some drugs, so it should be administered at least 2 hours before or after other medications.
Adverse reactions: The most commonly reported adverse reactions associated with sucralfate include constipation, nausea, and stomach upset. Hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, have also been reported in patients taking sucralfate.
Drug interactions: Sucralfate may interfere with the absorption of some drugs, such as tetracyclines, quinidine, and digoxin. Antacids should not be taken within 30 minutes of sucralfate administration.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: The safety of sucralfate during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Patients should consult their healthcare provider before using sucralfate during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Overdose: Overdose with sucralfate is unlikely. In the event of overdose, symptomatic treatment should be given. Dialysis is not likely to be effective in removing sucralfate from the body.
